Universal Children's Day

The rationale for development of PictureBookPerfect is to meet the scope of our assessment brief, which is to select one of the United Nations (UN) endorsed national celebrations, as the basis for the blog. A theme as it were for tying content together and providing a common point of departure for recommended readings, activities developed and scaffolded learning experiences which will be put forward as content within blog posts.

Based on this I have selected Universal Children's Day. Held on November 20 each year, Universal Children's Day is a celebration of the worldwide fraternity and understanding between children. Details of the Charter as endorsed by the UN, can be found on their web page at http://www.un.org/en/events/childrenday/

Selecting picture books seemed the obvious choice to promote this subject as it allows scope for development of a specific subject subset in order to place parameters around my selection of materials. Without this, the scope of the blog has the potential to become a runaway train with so many tangents and adjuncts that my concern is it will loose it's viability as a resource and learning tool.

Further to this then, I decided to base the coordinating theme on the concept of children and their place in their world. How is it that children determine where they fit? What is relevant for them? How do they make meaning out of the world around them? What is their place and role in their world?

My hope is that the resources addressed in this blog will provide support materials for you to utilize to help children make sense of and enjoy interacting in their world, as citizens of the world.
